I am looking into the history of William Lux and Elizabeth Davis and their possible relationship to my ancestor, John Gerking, of Louisville, Kentucky. In September 1791, William Lux signed the Marriage Bond for my ancestor, John Gerking for his impending nuptials to Rachel Rice.In researching Early Virginia Marriage Bonds, it appears that the person putting up the bond was usually a relative or very close friend. Our family has long been seeking the roots of our immigrant ancestor, John Gerking, and wonder if he might have been a servant or friend of the Lux family.John appears to have come by himself to the US as a young man.He was born 1764 in Germany, and yet spoke and wrote perfect English. He may have been raised in England or the states. He was not a farmer and the source of his income has never been found. It has been speculated that he was someone's secretary or assistant because he was so well educated and yet not from an affluent family. We wonder if the Lux family brought young John over as an indentured servant about 1776.Do you have any information on William Lux's upbringing or cousins? Any information you might have to share would be appreciated.Thanks.
