I am quite perplexed by the name of my 5th grt. grandmother and its 3 different known spellings.I am here in hopes that someone more experienced at researching this surname will be able to help me. My 5th grt. grandmother on her Marriage record from the Church of Christ (now Congregational) in Buxton, York Co., Maine in Jan. of 1774, was listed as Elizabeth DONALD. However, there was a footnote in the records that said, "this name is more commonly spelled DUnnell and DOnnell". My 5th grt. grandparents daughter Sarah MOODY, named a child with the middle name of DUNNELL, however I don't necessarily trust ancient spellings as very few knew how to properly spell in the 1700's. My Moody family I am quite convinced was from a Scottish POW by the name of Ingram MOODIE sent to Lynn, MA to work at the Saugus Ironworks in 1650 as an indentured servant. My family is married into Many of the Scot families whose men were captured by Cromwell from the Battle of Dunbar in Sept. 1650 and the Battle of Worcester in 1651 and many of those men were sent to New England where my family all were from. I cannot determine if my 5th grt. grandmother's family were also from a Scottish lineage or not. From what I can gather, her father Benjamin DONNELL (as is it spelled in the old records of Georgtown, Lincoln Co., ME where he was apparently a ships captain or similar), was a son of Nathaniel Donnell > Thomas > Henry 1 DONNELL/DUnnell/Donald.
I have a note from a link at the website Electric Scotland that I found in June of this year that mentioned that a Mark Hill DUNNELL who served 8 terms in the US Congress for the State of MN, was from Maine and moved to MN after he served in the Civil War.It went on to say that his ancestors were SCOTS from the Clan DONALD and that they settled in Maine in 1634.It also said that Henry DONNELL landed in VA in 1634 aboard the merchant ship "Bonaventure" on a fishing voyage and made his way to York Co., Maine where he settled and became a landowner. Henry Donnell owned Jewel Island in Portland, Maine and was a fisherman and innkeeper. Jewel Island was at one time called Donnell's Island.
Since the record of Marriage for my 5th grt. grandmother states that her surname was DONALD, I am inclined to believe that her maiden name was originally DONALD from the Clan Donald or MacDonald I am guessing would be more correct and wondered if the Clan MacDonnell was linked to the Clan MacDonald?? This is all so confusing to me, any help would be Greatly appreciated. Thank You.
