Okay, I am stuck, and I just have nowhere else to look. I have been stumped by the following paragraph in the family bible ....
"I John McLean, son of Daniel McLean and Mary Reid, born in the county of Antrim Ireland, in the Parish of Ballycriggan, near the Giant's Causeway on June 22, 1818.
My ancestors were from the Island of Mull, Scotland. They emigrated to Ireland in the 18th Century. My grandmother lived to the great age of 108 years. When quite a boy I was sent to Belfast city to be educated where I remained a student until the age of 19 years. I was offered a position in the Belfast Institution as teacher, which I accepted and filled for two years. In my 22 year, my siter, Mrs. Campbell (we think her first name was Rose) and I emigrated to N.Y. city where she died shortly after. I remained in N.Y. for two years and came to Kingston, Canada, which was then little more than a howling wilderness."
here's more information:
Daniel MacLean (the above John's father) had a brother John MacLean who was married in Ontario Canada in 1824 and he was born in Antrim ... so Daniel was probably born in Antrim also.
I have traced all the lines here in Canada from both Johns down.
I have searched and searched for Ballycriggan in Antrim Ireland ... there isn't one. I've thought maybe it's Ballycregagh ... or if it's near the Giant's causeway ... maybe he meant Ballycraig in Portrush Rural, or Derrykeighan in Lower Dunluce.
I can't find him. I have his birthdate, an idea of a townland or parish in Antrim ... near the giant's causeway. I know his parent's names. It is possible that Daniel and his brother the uncle John had parents who were born in Scotland as he says his ancestors were from the Isle of Mull and the Uncle John has Scottish listed as his ancestry on canadian censuses but showing ireland as his place of birth.
they were Presbyterian. Apparently Daniel McLean and Mary Reid.John left about 1839 with his sister Rose Campbell. He arrived in New York, she died, and he stayed for two years and then went to Frontenac Co., near Kingston.
In later years brought out his parents Daniel and Mary and sisters Mary and Jane to Canada. They were here when his mother Mary (Reid) MacLean died in 1848.So they came to Kingston, Ontario area, sometime between his marriage in 1842 and 1848.
When John Arrived in Canada, he stayed with his father's brother (Also John McLean - the uncle - who had come before 1824 as he married here also ... to a Betsy Milton).
I don't find them on ships lists ... or in New york obituaries (where Rose died) ... I have nothing.
I am hoping for some help, either someone to do a lookup in Ireland for the birth of John (the Uncle)MacLean (born about 1789 and his brother Daniel (born 1792) in Antrim; or a shiplist showing the uncle coming over between 1810-1824 or someone to point me in the right direction.
