John Thanks for the reply. It is great to get some other insights to this family. We have that brick wall to get past and hopefully, someone will hold the key. I'll share my comments after yours. This isn't based on my own research but on others who have passed it on to me.
John: Starting with Duncan Macrae b about 1755 ( I show in Quebec) married Margaret Mcintosh (b abt1757)and married in 1775.
Mary Ann: The birth of Duncan in Scotland about 1739-40 is based on family tradition that has been handed down in letters. I've never seen any proof one way or the other.
I agree with your researcher that he was more likely to have been born about 1755. If we take into account the “Untitled Relief Book” he was born sometime between 1751 and 1755. However, I do have a feeling that he was born in Scotland, came to Canada as a soldier, was injured and as soon as possible went back to Scotland to marry Margaret and as a couple they went to Quebec to start a life. Going to Quebec with the other Loyalists suggest to me that he didn't have a family in Canada prior to the Revolution.
John: They had a son Farquhar MacRae b abt 1776 in Quebec.
Mary Ann: Although I haven’t seen the record myself, a researcher sent me that Farquhar was baptized at the Holy Trinity Church in Quebec City, Quebec 12 Jan 1777. His father was listed as Dungan McCraw and mother Marquerite. The Godfathers and Godmothers were John Ferrier, John McCraw and Mary McDonald. (Reel C2897, page 47)
John: He married Margaret Smith (b abt 1777 in Quebec).
Mary Ann: Margaret’s surname is interesting. Either Farquhar keeps marrying women named Margaret or she has varied surnames. 1. Margaret Gow (this was the original name shared with me, mentioned their son’s obituary) 2. Margaret Gow dit Smith 3. Margaret Smith 4. Margaret Ritchie (found on Raymond Garrett’s site) The only source I’ve been able to find supports Margaret Ritchie. I asked Raymond for his source and he said that the death record of John Ritchie (17 Jan 1822) was witnessed by Duncan McRae and Farquhar McRae (son in law).
John: They had a son Farquhar John Ban Macrae b abt 1812 in Quebec.
Mary Ann: This is where your researcher and those I’ve been in contact with split paths. We have that Farquhar had a son named Farquhar who was born in Hope Township in 1812 and died there 26 May 1865, aged 53 years; buried 28 May 1865. He married 1st Jane Gallon and 2nd Sarah McGee (in New Carlisle 30 Apr 1839).
According to their research, which appears to be based on census records, this Farquhar did have a son named John R. McRae who was born in 1854 (mother Sarah McGee) They have him marrying Barbara McRae. Feel free to email me and I’ll send you a copy of what I was given, listing the addresses of the researchers
