Pete,
I have reviewed the various abstracts of the records of Surry and Isle of Wight Counties, VA, and am sure that Zacharias and Zachariah Maderra are the same person. I'm talking about the one whose first wife was Priscilla Deberry. When he signed his name himself when witnessing a will or deed, the most consistent recording of his namebefore 1730 was "Zacharias Maddera."When other people spelled his name, there were several variations: Zachariah, Zack., Zack, etc.The surname had even more variations: Maderra, Madderra, Madders, Maderna, Madra, Maddery, etc., but upon looking up the records, one discovers that they are all the same person by reference to associates, neighbors, location etc.
Incidentally, I have all of the books of abstracts of the early records of Surry Co, VA, Isle of Wight Co, VA and Northampton Co, NC---the migration route of my DeBerry family and some of their Maddra cousins---and will do look-ups for any Maddra descendants who don't have easy access to them.I know you're concentrating on research in England, but maybe someone else is looking for these books.
Good luck on your trip to England.I envy you!
