I have been working on the Magets (spelled various ways) in East TN for some time now. There seems to be some speculation as to whom they descend from. My line started with this family:
Hugh Benjamin Maggott/Maget/Maggett
born ca.1809, possibly in KNox or Jefferson Co., TN and died about 1847 (left Will) in Knox Co., TN. I believe they lived in an area northeast of Knoxville, south of Home Mtn., and just west of Strawberry Plains (now in Jefferson County), in or near an area known as Mascot. Hugh married Feb.2, 1826 in Knox Co to Jane Meek, born in 1810 likely the same area. Jane outlived her husband and never remarried. She died sometime after 1870, possibly in Blount County. Right now, I think she was a daughter of Robert Meek and Esther McMillan. Both her parents were born in TN according to Census records.
Six children are associated with Hugh and Jane, and I'm looking for any additional information on them:
1.Elizabeth Maggitt/Maget, born 1830 in Knox Co.; married Feb.5, 1852 there to George Underwood (quite older than she)
2.Mary Jane Maggitt, born 1834, Knox Co., TN; married first Aug.3, 1854 in KNox to James Nipper (they were neighbors as children) and secondly Feb.8, 1857 in Knox to James C. Harbison. They moved to Blount County TN, she outlived him and her mother was living with them in 1870.
3.Martha Maggitt/Madjett, born Mar.23, 1835, Knox Co., TN; she married Oct.20., 1853 in Knox Co to Isaac Duncum (but originally this name was Duncan, I have no idea why the name changed). They moved to Lee Co., TX where she died in 1916. These are my ancestors.
4. Robert Maggitt, born 1839, Knox Co., TN
5.Margaret Maggitt, born 1842, Knox Co., TN
6.Amelia A. Maggitt, born 1846, Knox Co., TN
I'm working on the theory that Hugh was a son of a William Maget and Martha Taylor.
This William B. Maget was probably William Benjamin Maget/Maggard and the same who was born Jul.13, 1762 in Surrey Co., VA. I think he is the same who appears on Rolls in Surrey Co., Va in 1782 and 1784 adn on the 1790 Census for Surry Co. It was probably shortly after this he migrated to the Rockingham area and later Mascot area of Tennessee. He appears on the 1806 Tax List under Capt.Price's Company in East TN (p.85) and left a Will in 1822 in Jefferson Co., TN. This is most likely the same William who married Aug.26, 1806 in Knox Co to Martha Taylor, a William Taylor being the bondsman. Martha was born in 1781 in PA and died in Knox Co., TN 1850-1860. William may have been her father, there is a possibility an Andrew Taylor was her brother (There are several early Taylor families in that area at the same time).
A brother to William Maget may have been a Gainum Maget was born in 1775 and died in Knox Co.
Children I believe are associated witht William and Martha:
1.William Maggott/Maget, born ca.1807, Knox Co., TN; m. Sept.7, 1830 there to Nancy Little
2.Rufus Morgan Maggott/Maget, born Jun.25, 1808, Knox Co., TN; died Jun 27, 1880; m. Feb.17, 1845 in Grainger Co., TN to Telitha Jane Minett (Mynett)
3.Hugh Benjamin Maggott/Maget/Maget, born ca.,1809 (see above)
4.John Davis Maggott/Maget, bornJul.12, 1810, Knoxville, Knox Co., TN; died Jul.29, 1868, Platte Co., MO; married Dec.22, 1835, Knox Co to Nancy Martin
5.Gainum Cox Maggott/Maggettm, b. ca.1811; died 1849
6.James Maget/Maggott/Maggitt/Madgett, born 1815, Knox Co.; m. Apr.18, 1839 in KNox to Mary Howell
7.Samuel Maggott.Maget, born ca.1817; died 1849, Knox Co.
8.Martha Madget/Maggott/Maget, born ca.1819, Knox Co; married Jun.28, 1839 there to William E. Carter
9.Calvin Maggott/Maggitt/Maggit, born 1820, Knox Co.; m. Dec.23, 1842, Grainger Co to Elizabeth J. Kennon
10.Elizabeth Maggott/Maget, born ca 1821; d. Jan.17, 1879, IA; m. May 7, 1840 to Joseph Harvey Evans
I am awaiting some Wills I ordered from Knox. I need to find some proof to backup the theory that William Maget and Martha Taylor were the parents, etc.
The hard part is keeping everybody separated. The Meeks and other families intermarried, and there were many branches of the family living in the same area. Supposedly, William Maget is the son of Micajah Maget and wife Susannah, but I can find no proof of this. I believe he is clearly a member of the VA family, but how?
Looking forward to feedback!
