Emmert Madsen d.1986

Hi.I'm not sure where to start.My grandfather is Emmert Madsen.He died in 1986 and was married to Norma Paulsen who recently passed away.They lived in SW Iowa.I'm just started to research my family roots.This is all I know for names.
