Your kinda of right the maese family came not to long after Onate, and settled in Northern New Mexico. After the revolt of 1680 they were forced out and founded Preasnt day El Paso. In 1692 Diego de Vargas brought the Settelers on the re-conquest of Northern New Mexico. Some of the original family's came with him some did not. Half of some family came with DeVargas other half stayed behind that is what happed to the Maese family the ones who came with the reconquest later dropped the (E) and became MAES in that is the name we go by now inNorthern New Mexico in El Paso and Northern Mexico the kept the (E) Maese. We in Nothern New Mexico became Americans in 1846 and the ones who stayed back stayed Mexicans.
