Magets in Colonial Virginia
There is information about Magets in Colonial Virginia at
I descend from Elizabeth Maget (b. February 15, 1813 in Knoxville, Tennessee; d.January 17, 1879, probably near Lineville, Iowa; and buried in Shields Cemetery [Row 6 Stone 7] in Woodland Township in Decatur County, Iowa). On May 7, 1840, she married Joseph Harvey Evans (b. March 8, 1817, in Knoxville, Tennessee)in Knox County, Tennessee.
From Internet sources I have pieced together Eliazabeth's probable ancestry, but I unable to affirm that my reconstruction is true history.
Elizabeth Maget descends from --> Martha Taylor (b. 1781) and William B. Maget (b. 1762) --> Susanna Unknown and Macajah Maget --> Samuel Maget and Unknown Bramley --> Nicholas Maget (b. 1671)and Ann Unknown --> Samuel Maget.
I would be glad to hear from others who are working this line and have more data than I have. This name is spelled in MANY different ways: Madget, Maggett, Magette.
I am not sure of the nationality of first Magets.I have seen the name used once in a genealogy for a Scots family. In Europe the Maget name is now used both in France and in Germany.I have found Maget listed among European Jewish names, so I questioned a Dutch Jew closely about the name; she had never heard it as either a Jewish or a gentile name. Many researchers rashly assume that it is a Huguenot name because it looks French with its et ending.Among the Magets whom I have contacted in America, none has even the vaguest notion of the nationality of the name, probably because the family has been here from early colonial times.
