Hello! It's been over ten years since you posted the note about your family and William H. Mahaney, Civil War veteran. I wanted to add some further information, which is slight, but thought you might like to know it.
My grandparents, Richard and Isabelle Murphy and their daughter, Dolores (my mother) rented an apartment (actually half the house, which I believe was the second floor) from Mr. Mahaney's daughter, who was married to a Mr. Duff (I knew them when I was quite young as Mr. and Mrs. Duff; Mr. Mahaney died either the year I was born or close to it and I never had the pleasure of meeting him). The Duffs were more like friends of my grandparents than they were like "landlords".
My mother (who was born in 1923) used to tell us about sitting with Mr. Mahaney for hours (or so it seemed to her) as he her told stories about his experiences in the War. However, being quite young and not particularly interested in that sort of thing, while she would sit there politely and listen, didn't remember much about what he told her.
I guess he found her to be quite companionable and, according to my mother - and grandparents - he took a special interest in her and enjoyed spending time telling her stories and taking play tea with her (she had a lovely china tea set, that she used to serve tea and cookies). I can just picture the old Civil War vet and the little girl sitting there having tea, while he reminisced about his experiences in the War.
Just a vignette that I thought you'd enjoy knowing. I really hope you receive this note.
