Hi This family is new for me. I am working on my husband's mother's side of his family. They were always told that they (the Hauser's) were suppose to be somehow related to Robert E. Lee. I was able to get the Hauser side back to about 1780's in New York and from what I can gather, they were most likely Dutch....doesn't sound like a R.E. Lee connection there. My husband's grandmother on the mother's side was Mary Rozella Crouse. She was bn. Apr 1893 and married in 1912 to J. Merritt Hauser. Mary Rozella Crouse was the daughter of Joseph T. Crouse bn. Nov 1857 in Virginia. Joseph was the son of Joseph Crouse bn abt 1804 in North Carolina and married about 1845 to Susannah Maiden br. abt 1826 in Virginia. Comparing the 1820 and 1830 census indexes for Virginia; I think Susannah must be the daughter of either James, John or Jacob. According to what I have found and also what you posted here; "vii.JOHN MILTON MAIDEN, b. January 16, 1797, Swift Run Gap, Rockingham Co., VA; d. May 20, 1862, Meadow View, Washington Co., VA; m. SUSANNAH LANDIS, March 11, 1817, Augusta Co., VA; b. May 4, 1799, Botetourt, VA; d. March 28, 1850, Shortsville, Washington Co., VA."
Since the mother's name was Susannah, it is likely these are her parents. Do you happen to know if John Milton Maiden left a will? I have never done any research in the state of Virginia and so I'm kind of in the dark with this one. Joseph and Susannah (Maiden) Crouse lived mostly in Ohio; but must have returned to Virginia for a few years, as 3 of the children were born there according to the census; Lucinda S. Crouse in 1854; Mary Crouse in 1856 and Joseph T. Crouse in Nov. 1857. by May 1860; they had returned to Ohio where their son, Andrew was born. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.Does anyone have a complete list of the children of John Milton Maiden and Susannah Landis? Thanks in advance Cindy Leutz
