Go to www.familysearch.org, a Latter Day Saints site. Found some info for you there. Looks like James was born in 1871, not 1877, in Wisconson. Has James Parents names listed there as well, so takes you back one more generation. Fannie Rumpie, not Fannie Rumppe seems to be the correct spelling.
James is one of 12 children. Go to this site and do a search filling in the names of the parents only. You will see James siblings with dates, etc. Should give you a big step back another generation.
James father is George W. Mains and his Mother Vena D. Alderman. George was born in 1849.
I did some searches on George for you, trying to get to country of origin. Because of traditional naming patterns forenames will repeat themselves accross generations. There are several in both Scotland and England. The occupations of those in England tend to be coal miners. Many Scots moved to England to mine. It is likely that your last name if of Scottish origin, it is a sept of 2 Clans, Clan Gunn (of which I am a member) and Clan Calhoun (the name was introduced by marriage into this Clan a few hundred years ago). It is most likely of Scottish origin. I will let you have the rest of your fun. I am interested in this entry as a couple of the Georgee Mains's listed in Glasgow are from where my Mains line is from, and the siblings have similar naming patterns for the males named. There's a possibility therefore we are related. Time will tell. If you need help let me know.
