We could be onto something here.I had a look at the Family search site and have found only 2 Daniel Maitlands around the time in question.
One of them was born in 1798 in Glasgow and is the only child recorded for his parents (john Maitland and Margaret Dougall)The other one however was born in 1802 and had three brothers: 2 called John and one called William. It is then possible that my James Maitland is really called John.I'm thinking along this line as the fathers name on John Maitland's marriage record to Elisabeth Muir is in fact John and not James.James is used on all of the birth records for James + Annes' children. That's a bit confusing!!!Do you get what I mean?!I hope so as it means there is probably a link. The parents of John, John, William and Daniel are: John Maitland and Janet Bulloch
In my line James (possibly John)Maitland and Anne Mcewen had two daughters called Janet in 1827 and 1830.I think the elder one died young. It would make sense that if James' mother was called Janet there would be more of a reason for a child to be named after her - hence the second use of the name after the death of the first daughter.
I hope this makes some kind of sense to you!! Karen
