I am trying to solve a puzzle. I know, who among us isn't trying to slove the puzzles of our ancestors. The Facts:
John MAITLAND & Agnes GIBSON were married in 1768, Neilston, Renfrew. This was a Patron submission on the IGI and the patron sheet indicates the information came from the parish Registers, Neilston, Renfrew.
Same source provides information that Agnes Maitland, b. 9 Oct 1769 & c. 15 Oct 1769. Agnes died 6 Jun 1846, death a verified parish register entry for Fintry Stirling. Parents John Maitland & Agnes Gibson.
John Maitland, b. 12 Jul & c. 17 Jul 1785. John died 8 may 1860 in Fintry, Stirling (verified). Parents John Maitland & Agnes Gibson.
Ann Maitland b.14 Sep & c. 19 Sep 1790 Mearns, Renfrew parents John Maitland - Margaret Gibson (IGI extraction). Now Ann dies in Fintry 1 Feb 1856- her death entry lists her brother John as the informant and her parents as John Maitland & Agnes Gibson.
So this family moved to Fintryat some time after 1790. It is a long way from the 1768 marriage to a 1790 birth for this couple. None of the above children married.
At the time of the 1841 census there were 14 Maitland's in Fintry. 10 of them belong to the family I am connected with and one is unknown at this time. The other three are the above Agnes, John & Anne.
There is obvious confusion over the actual parents of Ann. I can suspect that an illegitimate birth was covered up and Ann could be the child of Agnes or another family member, OR she could be a child born to the named parents. Estimating Agnes Gibson's birth about 1748 would have made her 42 for this birth.
Now John, at his death, the informant was his nephew John. Well the only John in Fintry at the time, was a son to the family I am researching.
Am I leaping to broad conclusions that the family group above is directly related to my large family group? I can go into naming patterns and tell you that the appropriate daughter was named Agnes in my family and the first son was named John (the nephew who was the informant). This is important because the patriarchial head of my family cannot be connected to any parents at this time AND besides my male possible connection, I have two married female connections that probably belong with the family group.
So, if anyone is researching this line, I would dearly like to hear from you and even you are not researching this line, you opinion would be appreciated.
