Connie,It seems that A.J. was somewhat of a scoundrel. He apparently never returned to IN after the Civil War as Zoa was living alone with 4 of their children, John, Sarah, Theodore and William in 1870 and with son, William, in 1880.It seems that A.J.(spelled Mellott in 1880) had at least two children by another wife in IL, namely Charles H. and Lou Ellen, both born in IL. Also, possibly F. Malott, daughter, b. about 1874 TX and J.W.(probably John Wesley), b. about 1878 TX.This census age does not bother me because A. J. gave his age as 22 in 1850 and 28 in 1860. I don't have pension papers or bounty land papers for A.J.You should write to the National Archives to see if he has any papers there.I'm sure that he applied for a pension. e-mail me: firstname.lastname@example.org.
