Hi Jim, I am new to this line of research, because I am working on the Dragoo/Drago/Drageau/Dragaud family. The other day I spotted the name Marlett in some of the various internet trees as the last name for my gt. gt. gt gt.grandmother Mary.Until recently we thought the name might be Marye, but when I found an extensive tree on the Marlett/Malott/ family, it had a very strange twist to it.
The Dragoo family and the Marlett family started out on Staten Island, Richmond County, NY and belonged to the same French church as records for both were documented there. These two families were iin New Jersey, Frederick Co. MD, Winchester VA. and Springhill Twp, Fayette Co. PA. The son of Peter and Mary (Marlett ?) Dragoo and his wife Margaret McCafferty disappeared, with the tradition that the boys, Frederick and Peter taken by Indians. We know Peter was a trader near Chatham and stayed with the Indians and was called "Indian Pete"We know Frederick, my ancestor was born April 3, 1773 and young when taken.I am wondering if perhaps this Mr. Govro (Peter Geauvreau) might be Peter Drago. If the name is said enough times, it sounds like the same name. Later Indian Pde visited his relation in Ohio and was dressed like an Indian and the women were afraid of him. Also, there is now information of an Indian Charlie Dragoo that I have had suspicions that might be part of this family. According to that story, a Captain Morgan was involved in bringing a small child back to the kin after he had died.Considering that the famlies of Dragoo and the Marlett/Malott traveled so close together, they had to be connected in some way.If it were me, if a family were not kin, I would wonder in time how to get rid of them, this just doesn't seem normal from the 1600's to the 1800's. When I recognized Simon Girty's name I decided to check that line and the Malott lines to see if I could find any useful hints.
Have you come across any of the children of this Peter who married Ann Girty? One of Indian Pete's sons married an Indian girl. Their son Joseph married Elizabeth Lafayette and the dau.married Peter Lafayette.Someplace, I recall seeing tha Indian Pete married a malott, but at the time I didn;t pay more attention to it because I thought of Malotto and figured it meant half Indian and half white.
If you or anyone reading this has an answer to the background of this, I would appeciate hearing from you as I know this is a long and complicated explainaton, but any one small part might be a key to solving this mystery.
