John Hume MANDERSON appears to be the son of George MANDERSON & Janet HUME who lived near Dunbar, Scotland. Janet HUME is probably the dau of William HUME & Janet BAYLLIE.
William HUME b abt 1690 m Janet BAYLLIE, 1712 or 1713 (marriage shown in both Stenton & Dunbar), East Lothian, Scotland. He died prob aft 1732 in Dunbar. Ch born in Stenton or West Barns (Dunbar): William, George, Jennet, Robert, Barbara, Marion, & James. Wits to chris of ch incl George, Robert, & William HUME. Children were born at Stenton & West Barns, both in East Lothian. Records for children born in West Barns are in Dunbar Old Parochial Register. William was a tenant farmer.
William's parents may have been George HUME & Margaret HAY. There is no christening record for William, but George & Margaret, of West Barns, had children baptized in Dunbar Parish, East Lothian, Scotland, about the right time: Kirstine HUME chris 17 Mar 1695 & James HUME chris 31 Jul 1698. George HUME & Margaret HAY were married in Dunbar parish 20 Jun 1694. Another possibility for William's parents is the couple George HUME who married Margaret DAWSON Apr 1678 in Dunbar parish.
I have not been able to further trace this family that probably migrated from elsewhere to Dunbar several generations back. Have been to Hume--calling it a village is a stretch. Think that there were only a few houses there. No evidence thus far to connect our family of tenant farmers to the well-known Hume family. It is possible--the Humes sided with the Jacobites, and some lost land because of it and would have been in greatly reduced circumstances--with some migrating to the U.S. as a result. However, our family seems to be in the Dunbar area as far back as late 1600s; any connection, if it exists, to the prominent Hume family is likely more distant.
