Steve Raye writes: “White Mansell married Martha Tackett, a neighbour in Saltillo. Of note is the religion, Jewish, of Martha's mother, Nancy Tackett. It was unusual to find a Jewish settler in Mississippi during this time.”
From our footnotes on the subject of Elvis Presley’s “Jewish” ancestry:
“The unproven union between Abner H. Tackitt, 1803-1889, and a Nancy J. Burdine (no dates), has been spread “across Internet Family Trees” as fact. However, NO EVIDENCE has ever been given, with any of these “Family Trees,” to prove the Tackitt connection by any verifiable sources. The origin of this apparent “myth” appears to have come from one Oscar L. Tackett, 1902-1990, a son of Jerome LandTackitt, c1856-c1919, late of Lee Co., MS, and his first wife, Nancy Jane Proctor, b c1853..Oscar tells the story that Jerome Land Tackitt was a son of Abner H. Tackitt & Nancy J. Burdine, a “jewish girl” from Tennessee.
Although we really have little reason to doubt the assertion that Martha Tackett married Samuel White Mansell in 1870 Lee Co., MS, No solomnization was returned so it has yet to be determined that the marriage was actually performed. Also note that her father is NOT noted on either of these two records. It was up to the Minister who performed a marriage to return this record and he may have just forgotten, or it got lost.”
