Hi list, Have been working on the Mantooth genealogy, off and on for the past 10 years.I have a very round-about way of asking a couple of questions. First: I have a copy of the original hand written agreement of Elizabeth Phariss to marry Thomas Mantooth Sr.This is from the Phariss Family Bible...(The cover page reads 'Samual Phariss _?__Bible--bought the year 1742'.The paper that was placed in the Bible, is signed by Elizabeth Phariss and "test" by Samuel Phariss certifying her age as 21 and agreement to "enter into the state of holy mattremoney with THOMAS MANTUTH" (--verification of handwriting analysis has proven the name was NOT written "Monteith", but "Mantuth".), the 3rd day of September 1785(?). I think this would have been in Shenandoah Co., VA.--My question is, does anyone know if writing a paper like this was common practice? Would a literate, well established family 'allow' their daughter to marry an indian during that time? or, if, Thomas Sr., was Melungeon or Indian, was that the reason she signed a paper attesting to her age and intent?
Second:In 1908, at the age of 61 and with her sister Mary Griffith, my gg-grandmother, Elizabeth Ford Welch, .......daughter of Elizabeth Mantooth-(& James W. Ford) ...........grand-daughter of Thomas Mantooth Jr.,(& Letitia Dillon) .................and g-grand-daughter of "Cherokee" Tom Mantooth-(& Elizabeth Phares/Phariss) made application and was rejected as far as being able to verify Cherokee Blood through Thomas Mantooth Sr. I have a copy of her application. There is also an old photograph of Elizabeth Mantooth Ford, and her three sons, and though I cannot say whether she was or was not of indian descent, she had the facial characteristics of someone of Cherokee/Choctawheritage...some of the coloring and facial features are still evident in their descendants. So my next question is, is there anyone out there who would be willing and able, to set-up a Mantooth web page for us to post some of this information and photos?I would bet most of us have some bit of information that would help someone else or at the very least feed the controversy??I will freely admit I am a computer incompetent and would not know how to start. Sorry if I put you to sleep on this one--thanks to all--C
