Rebecca…..
The following is said to be from NE Pennsylvania Commemorative Biographical Record, Vol. 2, 1900, as quoted in private correspondence from Manzer researcher Jean Lorenz to myself in 1998:
A biography of Silas Henry Manzer, Civil War veteran:
His ancestors were early settlers in New York State.John Manzer, his great-grandfather and Christopher Manzer, his grandfather, were farmers at Northampton, NY, and his father, John G. Manzer, who is now a resident of Gibson Township, followed agriculture until his retirement in 1895.Christopher Manzer, our subject's grandfather, died at his house in Northampton, NY, in 1868, aged 78 years (b. 1790).His wife, Rachel Draught, who died in 1872, aged 68, was a daughter of John and Saloma Draught, of Northampton…..John G. Manzer, our subject's father, was born September 28, 1822, at Northampton, NY, and came to Susquehanna County in 1872, .locating in Gibson Township, where he now resides at the age of 77 years.
This Silas Henry Manzer is clearly of a later generation than your Silas Manzer b. ~1804.Jean Lorenz wrote that she had never found Christopher (1790-1868).By the way, the town of Northampton was once in Montgomery County, but became a part of the newly organized Fulton County in 1838.
Jean quotes another paragraph from the same book:
Henry Manzer, retired farmer of South Gibson, Susquehanna County, was born December 14, 1819, at Fly Creek, Otsego County, NY, a son of Rev. Lawrence and Mary (Price) Manzer…..Rev. Lawrence Manzer was born July 5, 1785, in Schoharie County, NY, a son of John Manzer, a farmer of Northampton, NY.When a boy, Lawrence removed to Otsego County and there on February 12, 1804, he married Mary Price, daughter of Timothy Price.About the year 1831 they migrated to Susquehanna County, PA…..Rev. Lawrence Manzer died January 3, 1869, his wife on November 10, 1872.Mr. Manzer was a member of the Old-School Baptist Church, and for many years served as minister of the denomination in his neighborhood, at the same time following farming until within a few years of his death.
This Henry Manzer is a contemporary of the John G. Manzer, father of Silas Henry Manzer, mentioned in the earlier quotation. If we can trust these accounts, Henry and John were likely first cousins.
I hesitate to add the following, which can only be describe as a jumble of unverified, unattributed, contradictory and confusing factoids (from Jean's correspondence):
This info originated in New Brunswick, Canada:
Manzer family is of Germanic origin probably from SW Germany.Prior to 1635, one or more Manzers went to England. On May 2, 1635, James Manzer, born 1608, sailed from England to the Barbadoes on the Alexander.About 1760 one or more of his descendants moved to Long Island and settled near what is now the Long Island end of the Brooklyn Bridge. On July 5, 1778, five Manzers joined the DeLancey Brigade, 2nd battalion. They were Barnet, Daniel, Christopher, Martin and John.In 1784, the five came to Canada:Daniel to Quebec and the other four to New Brunswick.About 1810, Daniel and his family (about 7 or 8) went to U. S. A.Martin had one son Lawrence who is believed to have gone to U. S., probably Philadelphia.Rest of Martin's family is believed to have been daughters who married in New Brunswick.Christopher had no family.Barnet, Christopher and John were known brothers.Martin and Daniel not known, could have been cousins.A great many of Barnet's family moved to the U. S.
I hate myself when I quote stuff like that.
I recognize that none of this has any concrete connection with your Silas, your Harley, or anyone else named in your query.
But maybe there's a clue in here somewhere for a diligent researcher such as you.
