Dear Faye,
Many many thanks for that information.Maria Knowles and Stephen Mapp, who married at Great Witley, were my great great grandmother and grandfather.I believe that the family were involved in the farming community, perhaps as labourers.William Henry went to work for Lady Emily Foley at Stoke Edith Park estate.Fanny Mapp went into 'service' and my mother tells me that she eventually became a housekeeper for Princess Alexandra at Sandringham, until she married, when the Princess bought her a wedding dress and her sister, a going away dress. She apparently went on trips with the family abroad and came back with a variety of foreign coins, which she showed my mother.I contacted the Royal Historical Archives to see if there was anything I could find out about this, but I received a polite letter back saying that there were no records of her at all, as their records are incomplete.I believe that Fanny married someone and may have lived in London thereafter, but have been unable to find out anymore.
Stephen Mapp (Maria's husband) died whilst still quite young, perhaps it was a farming accident ?Maria remarried to a Pritchard and went to live just outside Hereford.
My mother told me that there was a Richard or Geoffrey Mapp in the family and that he was a musician (possibly pianist) who went abroad to live in New Zealand, but I have been unable so far to back this information up with any records.
A younger Stephen Mapp, who I took to be a cousin of Stephen Mapp junior, died in the First World War one month before the end of the war and is buried in a war grave.I found out the location on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site.
many thanks again for your informataion. Please let me know if you know any more information, or have any connections to the family.
best wishes
David
