I think this might be a long shot considering that this discussion was started a while back, but Stephen Mapp is on my family tree. In the 1820s, around 1826 I think, but I can check the details when I have more time, a distant relative of mine married a Richard Mapp in Halesowen, where the Hodgkins line comes from. I know nothing about Richard other than he married a Sarah Hodgkins, who is related to me on my paternal line. The witnesses to the marriage were a John and Beady Hodgkins, also, obviously, related to me.
Maria's husband was only about 40 when he died. I also assumed it might have been an accident, but could have been anything.
It was a Stephen King (his second name was his mother's surname) Mapp who was killed in 1918. I have found a photograph on the net of a memorial he is named on Areley(?) College, but again I will check. However, he is also apparently named on the roll of honour at Worcester Cathedral.
I hope I haven't left doing this too late and someone is still interested. I'd love to know more about the Mapp's and would be happy to share the very little I know.
