Hello and thank you for your response. No, I'm not certain of anything.I've done more research on the family since posting this query and can give you more information, however.
Before coming to New York in Oct. 1893 (Ellis Island records), the family lived in London where "Emil" Marcus appears to have gone by the name of Alexander. He is listed as a Butcher's Assistant in the 1891 Westminster Dist., London, England census. He states he was born in Breslau, Germany! Now there's a surprise; it says Posen on his naturalization papers. Also he was born 1851 or 1852.On the Ship's manifest he is called Alexander, age 40 (close enough, will be 40 in 2 months), and butcher. His death certificate names his father as Samuel Shalom? Marcus.
His wife to be, Bertha WEINER (also WIENER, WIENAR) was living in a household as a cook in Paddington Dist., London, England. They married about 1891-1892 and I'm eagerly awaiting the marriage certificate which I just ordered this week. From the first names of the children in the families, both Bertha and Alexander/Emil were living in Jewish households. She states she was born in Hanover, Germany in the 1891 English census and her obituary says Posen. Her parents were Israel and Marian WEINER/WIENER according to her death certificate.
There is no sign of the daughter Lena, born c1882-1887 in England in 1991 unless she's living with a different family and under a different name. She married Henry HAYMAN c1903 in Springfield, MASS.The family moved to Massachusetts from NYC around 1894.I believe this daughter was not Bertha's daughter, since she was born before her parrents married and since Bertha was much younger than Emil/Alexander.
It is entirely possible that Emil/Alexander and Bertha did not even meet until they emigrated to England.I am also very perplexed about the names for Emil.I know that Emil had a grandson named Emil. Why did he go by Alexander in England and what prompted him to drop the name in America? Was it a middle name?
The following is the family group I have for Alexander/Emil and ?
