I agree that more information sometimes confuses more inasmuch as there seem to be more options. For confusion, try the 1870 census of Archibald Marley, next to William Marley, in Clay, Missouri!

If I remember right, John's "Houston" name was written in caps on the 1850 census. That's maybe why the indices show his last name as Houston. . ?
