Found this paragraph in a booklet titled"Missouri's Confederates 1861-1865" by Singleton B. Bedinger:
"Born near Arrow Rock, Missouri, March 14, 1833. Studied at Yale and Harvard, and graduated from West Point in 1857.In 1861 Marmaduke resigned his commision in the Union Army to become a Colonel in the pro-Southern Missouri Militia.He served gallantly at Shiloh, and was promoted to the rank of brigadier general in 1862.During the year of 1863, he made two raids into Missouri and was actove in the Red River campaign in 1864. Marmaduke was with Price in the Missouri Raid of 1864 and was captured in Kansas October 25th.While in prison he was appointed Major General March 18th, 1865. After the war he engaged in the insurance business in St. Louis, and later served as a member of the Missouri Railway Commission. In 1884 Marmaduke was elected governor of Missouri.He died before his term expired on December 28, 1887, and is buried at Jefferson City."
