My Marment ancestors are from the Stroud area of Gloucestershire, UK. There is a family story that the name comes from Auguste Frederic Louis Viesse de Marmont (1774-1852), the Duke of Raguse. This man was one of Napoleon's Artillery Generals until he was effectively exiled following his betrayal of Napoleon, surrendering Paris to the allies. The old French verb "to betray" is "raguser" after this man. Obviously I'd like to know if any other Marments or Marmonts have heard this story and if it can be substantiated.
My 4G Grandmother was Mary Marment born c 1767 in Rodborough, nr Stroud, Gloucestershire.
