Harry Marriott married Violet May Price, my Dads aunt, who was a school teacher at Spring Creek and Big Bar Creek.May is daughter of my grandfathers brother (Frank Price).Harry and Mayspent a great deal of time in the Big Bar - Gang Ranch area and Harry eventually wote a book, an autobiography of his experiences in the Big Bar - Crows Bar area of British Columbia.
May Marriott was 96 years old when I met her, living at Big Bar Lake.
Harry's cousin, Eric Collier, also lived in the wilderness, after arriving in British Columbia from Northhamptonshire , England in 1920.He wrote a book about his experiences called"Three Against the Wilderness" .
Harry Came out to BC from England as an immigrant in 1907.
1912: Returned to BC after 2 years working on a cattle ranch in central Washington state.Started working on the Gang Ranch.
1913: Took over management of Crow's Bar pasture (owned by Gang Ranch).
1915: Enlisted in the 158th Duke of Connaught's Own Regiment along with 6 other men from the Big Bar area.Served for 3 yrs and 2 months.Discharged in New Wstminster and returned to the Gang Ranch.
1919: Signed on as ranch foreman at Canoe Creek ranch.Acquired homestaed on Big Bar Lake.
1920: Started the OK brand.Eric Collier, his cousin arrived from England and worked for Harry for a time before leaving for Meldrum Creek, where he took up a trap-line and later married a local girl.
.Harry met May (Peg) Price in 1920 when she was teaching school at Spring Creek.Later, in 1920 she taught at 70 Mile-House.Harry and May got married in Burnaby at Christmas time, 1920, and they returned to live at the Big Bar cabin.
1923: Harry and Peg moved to Big Bar Lake homestead to satisfy the homestead obligations.
1925 Ron Marriott was born July 1925 in Vancouver.Harry and May returned to work at Canoe Creek Ranch.
1927: Harry worked for a month for surveyor Capt.Geoffrey Downton
1928 Harrys mother passed away in England.Bill Price, Harrys brother in law and his wife Grace came to work during the summer.
1931 Harry and Peg began the guest-ranch at Big Bar Lake.
1933 Started the OK Ranch with George Harrison.
1936-37 Five prospectors working at Big Bar: Bill Trimble, Porcupine Bill, Dick Butler, Davey Jones and Jim Fletcher.Bill Trimble had claims at the head of Watson Bar Creek.Davey Jones was a Welshman who lived about 4 miles from the OK Ranch and prospected west of the Fraser River for over 25 years.Jim Fletcher was a Boer War veteran who mined a high lead on the bank of the Fraser.
1950: The OK Ranch was sold
1952: Fire at the Big Bar guest ranch destroyed the lodge.
1954 Ron Marriott married Mary......... from the coast.
1955 Harry has a serious fall from a horse, leading to blot clots.Later develops pneumonia.Survives and lives for a time with son Ron.
1966: WroteCariboo Cowboy .
