This is the first time I peeked at the Marriott Forum. And right away I see a convergence of what I've been seeing at ancestry.com. I still haven't scrolled on down.
What am I doing here? Well, I've long been trying to find out about my maternal line, which mtDNA turned out to be U5b2, or U5b2b on Phylotree. OK. It looks like it came from the British Isles. However, it may have gone through a French Huguenot phase in early Virginia, depending on which of two branches it took on the way to myself. Alice Powell apparently was the only carrier of my haplotype in early Virginia, who was born around 1622 (or 1626 on some entries). She had two daughters, Elizabeth and Alice. Alice married Matthias Marriott. I don't know which of the two branches I belong to, but family whispers of long ago hinted at a French presence in the past.
I got to this point by tracing a rare HVR1+HVR2 match from the west coast back to Jamestown, via trees on ancestry.com. Although one usually can't use mtDNA results for such a fine-tuned tracing, luckily for me, my HVR1+HVR2 combination turns out to be rather rare. Well, that's enough for now, but I'll be keeping an eye on this forum.
