My great grandfather was named Joseph Segura Martin. He was from France and moved to New Mexico in the late 1800s. I believe he was born around 1876, but possibly earlier. He was a gardener in the north valley of Albuquerque, Los Griegos. But he was also a musician and fairly well-read. He taught all his kids French and Spanish, in addition to teaching them to read, before entering elementary school.
I have been unable to trace his French origins. I have speculated, with the help of a French pen pal, that he may have been from the Basque area of France, but that is as far as I can get.
