I spent 5 summers working on Mackinac Island while in college and had always heard from relatives that some ancestors were born on or around the Island. The names were Alpine and Duffiny which I'm told are also known as Lapine and Dufinau of which I've known a many from the Island but always kept it to myself.Recently, I was thumbing through some old pictures that my granmother Evelyn Duffiny (I think that was her maiden name) had left behind and came across one of a guy named Joe Matineau, captain of the Algoma.According to my father, this was his great uncle. Now, the interesting part.My wife, Sandy Slocum's grandfather, Clarence Slocum was born in Charles, Michigan in around 1910 (that' a guess as he passed away in 1996).From what I read from your posting this is where the Martineau's originated. What an interesting twist of fate that my wife's grandfather and my great, great uncle may have known each other 75-100 years before we met.Incidentally, I was married on Mackinac Island.I would be interested in learning more about these characters.Any help in this area would be appreciated.Sincerely, Kurt Stauffer
