I want to share some information I have recently uncovered for the help of anyone looking and in hopes someone might help me further untangle some threads.
I have been researching my Swan(n) family from Baltimore, MD.I traced it to my g-g-grandfather, John Swan(n), who married Mary Eberhart and who had one daughter, Catherine. The 1850 Baltimore census has John living with Ann, born 1776, some more Swan(ns)--Eliza, James, George, and Richard who appear to be siblings (born app 1830-1848), some Shaws with a Richard T who was born 1805, and some Martineaus.
I have been working with the old Baltimore directories in conjunction with the census and have found there was an error on the census sheet.Richard T Shaw, listed as a sexton on the census sheet, was really Richard T Swan(n), listed numerous times in the directory as the sexton of the First Baptist Church of Baltimore--a magnificent building torn down in 1878 which was built by Robert Mills, the architect of the Washington Monument.
In further research I find that Richard T Swan(n) married a woman named Elizabeth Hincks in Baltimore in 1825--which would follow if they are the parents of the young Swan(n)s in the house, although I have no documented proof.Elizabeth's father was Thomas Hincks who was the sexton of the same church before Richard. They lived at the same address at one point.
Later in the century George Swan(n) is found to be the sexton of that church---our family apparently tending the grounds for most of it's years at Lombard and Sharp Sts.
I have also found the Martineau connection.William Martineau of DE, living in the house with his wife, Julia, did marry a Julia Ann Swan(n).She was born 1826 and could have been the first child of Richard and Elizabeth.
Obviously there is a lot of speculation, but the logic seems reasonable so far. What I am seeking is information from anyone who may know more.My biggest question is about the Shaw family. There is a Joseph Shaw married to Elizabeth and they had a child Elizabeth.Joseph was born in DC in 1828. Elizabeth was born in MD in 1832.I do not know how they relate to the rest.If Elizabeth is Elizabeth Swan(n), then who was Eliza Swan(n) born 1836?Later records show an Eliza Swan(n) with this family born 1809.I wonder if this is Eliza Hincks Swan(n) and there is another error on the census sheet.
I hope this information helped someone. If you know anything that could answer my questions I'd appreciate your assistance.Thanks.
