"Phil" Mason is a direct descendant of John Mason the Elder through Christopher Mason Sr. and Sarah Chappell; through Christopher Jr. and Martha Mason to their son James Mason. "Phil" Mason is an exact match on the Mason Worldwide DNA Site to Ron Mason who is descended from Christopher and Martha Mason's son Littleberry.
Christopher Jr. and Martha's son James Mason married Polly Hancock May 23, 1808 Brunswick Co. VA and their son Henry P. Mason was born in Brunswick Co. VA bet. August 6 andSept. 30 1810.(Source: Birth date taken from Census composite). The James Mason family first moved to Rutherford Co. TN where James Mason is shown in court records, the last dated 1826, before moving to Tipton Co. TN prior to the 1830 Census. Tipton is the same county that James Mason's sisters Jane "Jincy" Mason Wesson and Sarah C. Mason Campbell also moved with their families.

James Mason passed away following the 1830 Tipton Co. TN Census. His son Henry P. Mason returned to Rutherford Co. where his Uncle Francis Hancock, his grandmother Sarah Stainback Hancock and several other relatives were residing.Henry P. Mason married Mary Stevens 1833 in Williamson Co. which borders Rutherford Co. TN. Their first son James "E." Edgar Mason was born 4-1836 in Williamson Co. TN and died 6-29-1911 in Madison Co. TN. James E. Mason married Mary Susan Halfacre. Their first son was named James David Mason b. 4-18-1863 Madison Co. TN. and d. 1932 in Madison Co. In the 1840 Census of Tipton Co. TN is a J. J. Mason. We do know that John J. Mason married Lucinda Weaver January 1,1833 over in Shelby Co. TN. We believe this is John J., Lucinda, their children, the widow Polly Mason and Polly's two sons 15-19 in the 1840 Census. Then by the 1850 Tipton Co. TN Census, J. J. Mason has died(?) and Lucinda Weaver Mason is residing in the Weaver household:
1840 Census Tipton Co. TN: J. J. Mason 30-39 1 male under 5 2 males 15-19 1 female under 5 1 female 5-9 1 female 20-29 1 female 50-59(Polly Hancock Mason?? Age is correct) 1 slave 10-23
1850 Census Tipton Co. TN: C. D. Weaver 54 SC Lucinda W. Mason 32 b. TN, (John J. Mason dec.?) Ann C. Mason 14 John T. Mason 13 James R. Mason 12 Benjamin Mason 11 Joseph H. Mason 10 Littleberry E. Mason 2 Benjamin L. Weaver 17
One sees James, Joseph and Littleberry for Lucinda's children above. These are names of three of the sons of Christopher Jr. and Martha Mason. It could be a coincidence but we believe these boys were named for men in the Christopher Mason Jr. line.
An error occurred many years ago in the identification of this James Mason. It was posted various places that he was James Mason b. Greensville Co. VA to Edmunds Mason and Frances Young. However, their son James Mason born 1797 moved first to Giles Co. TN and from there over to Fayette Co. where he and his wife Frances lived out their lives. It was also reported that James, son of Edmunds was a doctor but so far I have not found that documentation. He is listed as a farmer or Planter in Fayette Co.Their son Robert Edmunds Mason is noted as a physician in the 1870 Census of Fayette Co. residing with his mother Frances Mason, head of household, as his father James Mason died after the 1860 Census. I'll post the census for James Mason, son of Edmunds Mason and Frances Young below.
1830 Census Giles County, TN Jas. E. Mason 30-39(age 35 b. 1797) 1 male 20-29 1 female 15-19 14 Slaves
1840 Census Fayette County, TN James E. Mason 40-49(age 45 b. 1797) 1 male 30-39 1 male under 5 4 males 5 -9 1 male 10-14 2 females under 5 2 females 30-39(James’ wife:Frances E. Mason age 31 b. 1809 NC) 23 Slaves
Couldn't find this family in the 1850 Census, not only in Fayette nor any TN County. Assume the census page was left off at Ancestry. However, the 1850 Slave Census of Fayette Co. TN is shown:
1850 Fayette Co. TN Slave Census: James E. Mason Owner Many slaves are listed.
1860 Fayette Co. TN Census James E. Mason 63 b. VAFarmer (born 1797) Frances E. Mason 50(before 51st birthday) W. M. Mason 24 Frank Mason 15 Josephine Mason 21
1870 Fayette Co. TN Census F. E. Mason 61 (Female) b. NC(Frances born 1809) R. E. Mason 40 b. TN Physician ** Frank Mason 24 b. TN Josie 12 b. TN Also the Cole family and a servant were residing with them too.
James E. Mason had died and Frances was head of household. Residing with her was her son **Robert Edmunds Mason, Physician age 40 b. TN. Frances E. Payne Mason was born August 19, 1809, Person Co. NC.
As one can see, Christopher Mason Jr.'s son James born 1784 was about 13 years older than Edmunds Mason's son.James Mason, son of Christopher Jr. was a great grandson of Capt. John Mason the Elder and Edmunds' son James Mason was a second great grandson of Capt. John Mason the Elder. All from the same Progenitor but definitely residing in different counties of TN.
