I would like to draw your attention to Mahmoud al Massad's debut feature film "Shatter Hassan" (Hassan the Clever One), a 40-minute (35 mm) docu-drama. This Dutch/Arabic production is based on a Middle Eastern childrens' fable about the legendary Shatter Hassan, a smart and empathetic young man whose stories have been told to more than 300 million children over the past hundred years.
In this version of the tale, our hero is removed from his magical faraway surroundings and transformed into a real-life drug addict residing in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
The story begins with a mother reciting a bedtime story about "Shatter Hassan" to her child in a timeless Oriental setting. The film proceeds to chronicle the real life of a Moroccan flute player in Utrecht who goes by the same name. Hard drugs and homelessness have taken their toll on Hassan, who initially loses his wife and family and eventually loses control over himself.
This documentation was shot during the course of several years.
Mahmoud's concept is an extremely inventive and challenging one, pioneering a controversial issue within modern Arabic film making
Hassan the junkie is a living example of one of the tragic consequences of immigration.
