Marie Elizabeth Haberman, age 94, daughter of Peter and Margaret (Schmitz) Mathias, was born on September 25, 1913 on her parents’ farm in Kinbrae, Minnesota in Nobles County. Marie attended the Kinbrae school, and the Dundee and Fulda high school. Following this, Marie completed nurses training at the College of St. Catherine and St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul. Marie married Joseph Haberman on November 17, 1936 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dundee. Following their marriage, the couple farmed the Haberman farm in LaCrosse Township, Jackson County. During this time, Marie practiced nursing in Lakefield and Heron Lake hospitals until 1969. Marie and Joe retired from farming in 1972 and built a house in Heron Lake.
Marie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake and was active in the Council of Catholic Women, the Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters, the Senior Citizens, and the Southwest Area Agency on Aging. An avid reader, Marie was a member of two book clubs. Marie also loved to travel. She and Joe made many wonderful trips to parts of the world.
Marie passed away on Friday morning, November 9, 2007 at the Sogge Memorial Nursing Home in Windom.
Marie is survived by a son Donald (Mary Ann) of Kimberling, Missouri, son David (Mary Ann) of Houston, Texas, daughter Margaret Ann (Larry) Domish of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and daughter Judith Diemer of Hudson, Wisconsin. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and fourteen great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband Joe, her parents and three brothers, Cyril, Ernest and Arthur.
Visitation will be Wednesday, November 14 from 5:00-7:00 p.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with a Rosary & Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 15, 2007, at 10:30 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Heron Lake, Minnesota, with Fr. Andrew Olsem officiating. Interment will take place at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Heron Lake, Minnesota.
