My name is Willie Sean Matney, and I am the great grandson of Alexander Pate Matney, or Alex Pate Matney. Alex had a brother named James H Matney who moved to Paintsville, Ky. where he lived and died. My great grandfather Alex lived at Mouthcard, Ky. He and James gave his parents names as Daniel Matney and their mother as Polly Fuller. Now by looking at the Census and going back, Daniel's wife was named Mary. I have heard of Mary Pollie Matney, but she was born into Walter Matney's family and was a Matney by maiden name. However, they give my great-great grandmothers name as Polly Fuller.
There are two sets of Matney's in eastern Kentucky that came from Grundy and Tazwell Va. My grandmother, Narcisa Ramey, married Willie Cambell Matney, who was Alex's Pate's son. When my grandfather died at an early age of around 23, she remarried another Matney from the different clan. My grandmother was Narcisa Ramey (maiden name). She married Rake Henry Matney for her second time just after having my father, so Rake Henry is my step-grandfather.
Rake Henry Matney's father is Henry Matney Sr. Henry Sr. had a brother named John. They both give their fathers name as an Alex Matney from Tazwell, Va. This Alex is older than my great grandfather who was born in Grundy to Daniel. Henry Sr.'s death certificate calls out Alex Matney from Tazwell Co. Va. Henry Sr. and Johns mother was Jane Hamilton from Pike Co., Ky.
So you see, we now have two Alex Matney's, and both are different in age. There are also two Polly's floating about.
Daniel Matney's wife was named Mary in the Census. But this Mary couldn't be the Marry Pollie Matney from Walter Matney. In the 1860 Grundy census, it shows a Daniel Matney at age 40 staying with a Ratliff family, but that's too young. According to my research, my great-great grandfather Daniel was born around 1803, or 1802.
In the 1870 Grundy census, we see both Daniel and Walters family. Daniel was 67 at the time. By this, he would have been born in 1803. It shows his wife was named Mary, and she was 35. If so, she would have been born around 1835. Both show they were born in Virginia. I also know there are a lot of Fullers in the area of Grundy.
Daniel's children were Looicia (or Looscia), Pricey, Elisha, Nancy, Mary, Alexander, (9 Jan 1863, my great grandfather), and James H (Harvey) Matney.
Walter, who was 37 at the time, shows his family to be; Elizabeth (wife 41), William 13, and Mary J. who was 9.
I do not know if this would be a Walter Jr. or Sr.The census page also shows some Fullers on it. Since they all lived nearby, I would say that Daniel's wife was probably Mary Polly Fuller. Another guess is that where everyone was distantly related, we had a bunch of same naming going on.
In the 1850 Tazwell census that shows a Walter Sr., and shows a son named Danl, I guess for short, it shows this Danl to be 35. This could not be the same Daniel as my great-great grandfather as the ages don't match by 12 years. That is unless that was supposed to be a 57 and not a 67, but it's still 2 years off. Walter Jr. was 52 in 1850, so he would have been 72 in 1870, and that couldn't be the same Walter I mention in the 1870 census. Maybe that Walter who was 37 in 1870 was Walter Jr.'s son?
Anyhow, my main question is, who is Daniel's father and mother, and, who is his wife to be called Mary or Polly Fuller? By what I've read of somes research, they say that both Daniel and the Walter in 1870 were brothers, and their father was Walter Matney Jr.? Their mother would then be Charity Young?
They also mention an Alexander Matney being Daniel's brother. Is this the same Alex in Tazwell that is John and Henry Sr.'s father? Henry Sr. was 62 in 1920, so he would have been born in 1858. He had a brother Leony born in 1854 and was the oldest. Their father Alex married Jane Hamilton in Kentucky on 12-28-1848. There is an Alex born in 1824, in VA, and died in 1879. His mother was from Ky., and Father from Va., but that's all I can find on a death record. No mother and fathers names. He is the only Alex Matney on ancestry.com that could be their father. He is also known as Alexander Matney, and is in the Ky. 1870 census. The census shows he is the correct one, being born in 1824. So, we would have an Alexander Matney born in Tazwell Co. in 1824. Does this mean that Walter Jr.had him while still residing in Tazwell county?
Any help would be much appreciated as I want to try to run the family on back to when they came to America. I also want to find where these two families of Matney's split.
The Matney surname is supposed to be a French name from the Champagne region. Though some came from Ireland and left from Liverpool England by boat. The Matney's back in my family (Alex Pates children) were red heads, so that tells me of an Irish or Scottish ancestry. Ships records show Matney's leaving from Ireland, England, and France.
