My father, Charles Caspar Mattes, was born in 1924 in Scranton.Since my parents were divorced when I was young, my contact with him has been sporadic, at best. His father (my grandfather) was Rev. John Caspar Mattes, a Lutheran minister, who was born in 1876 (don't know where, except it was in the United States) and died in 1948 in Dubuque, IA.Rev. Mattes pastored a Lutheran church in Scranton, and moved his family to Dubuque when he joined the faculty of Wartburg Theological Seminary.I'm not sure when they moved . . . I'm guessing probably in the 1940's sometime, but I could be wrong.
My father (Charles Caspar Mattes) was the youngest child in his family, and he had a large number of brothers and sisters. The only sibling that I can attach a name to is Olga Mattes (my godmother), who was born April 5, 1917 in Scranton and died October 1987 in Waterloo, IA.I know there were at least two other brothers, and probably other siblings. One became an Episcopal priest and had a church in the Hartford, CT area.I think my father had a brother in northeast Iowa, possibly Dubuque or Waterloo, but as far as the names of these uncles, where they are today, whether they are even alive, whether I have any other aunts/uncles on my father's side . . . I have absolutely no idea.
As far as my father . . . his last known address was in Kenosha, Wisconsin.Whether he's still in Kenosha, if he's moved, if he's still alive . . . again, I have no idea.My stepmother's name (if she's still alive) is Virginia Mattes, if that helps any.My father and stepmother were married about 1965, I believe.
Hope this helps, David.Let me know if you find any connections.
