Your follow-up to my message has been very helpful. One important way in which it has helped is that it has given me ideas on how to construct the following list of possible brothers and sisters of your Hezekiah Branson Mattison:
Pickens A. Mattison, born circa 1847 Sarah E. Mattison, born circa 1849 Hezekiah Branson Mattison, born January 1852 Margaret Mattison, born circa 1855 Caroline Mattison, born circa 1857 John R. Mattison, born circa 1860 Carrie Pratt Mattison, born circa 1862 Anna Mattison born circa 1866
How does this list compare to what is known by you or your mother? Do you recognize any of them besides John and Sarah?Do you know what happened to any of them, and who they married etc?Do you know the names of the parents of these children?
I know that Carrie had Clinkscales cousins, but did not know that this was the name of her first husband (I learned that Carrie had been married twice from the 1910 census of Marshall County, TN.) Do you know the given name of her first husband and/or what happened to him? Census records suggest that Carrie married her second husband, Clint Armstrong, about 1886.She was single in 1880. The 1900 census said that two children had been born to Carey, one of whom (Earnest Armstrong) was still living at the time. I don't know if the other child was by her first husband or the second. Also have wondered how in the world she met Clint Armstrong since the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census records list his birth state as Tennessee, and that is where he lived until his death in the 1920's and where she lived as late as 1930.
I loved your physical description of Hezekiah and the thumbnail sketch of his life.We are long time square dancers, so we were speculating on what dance calls he might have used in those early days.
