Richard, you mention your Great-Grandfather Edward, who settled on a farm in Oro Twp. In fact, that farm is still in our family. My late grandmother Thelma (maiden name Mawdsley) lived there and my Uncle Gilbert (my mom's brother) still lives there.
I'm fascinated by the fact that you inherited Peter's sword and spyglass! I would love to see a picture. Are you aware that there is a Mawdsley coat-of-arms? This is probably where the reference to "Gentleman" in Joan's post come from.
Another uncle of mine, Andy, has an albatross wing in a shadow-box that was apparently claimed by Captain Peter Mawdsley on one of his voyages. I'm not clear on how he claimed this--as far as I knew, killing an albatross on a ship is bad luck! But I'll do more asking around during Christmas.
