I'd just like to let you gents know that the genes of William Henry Herndon live on in a number of Herndon males. Some are yet in Springfield, IL and others around the country. Our family is very proud of this man, who was an attorney, mayor of Springfield, IL, was on the school board and most importantly to him and us, a dear friend of Abraham Lincoln. Their law practice was an equal partnership of mutual respect and trust.William H. was in no way President Lincoln's "lapdog."He saw his friend as he was, with strengths and weaknesses like all human beings and loved him nonetheless and vice versa.
William Henry had three sons by Mary Jane Maxcy. They were James Nathaniel, Beverly Powell and Leigh William. He had one son by Anna Miles, William, who died earlier in the day on which his father died.William Henry, Mary Jane, Anna and William are buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois.James Nathaniel, my great grandfather had 2 sons and 1 daughter; Leigh William also had two sons.Beverly Powell Herndon never married, but is buried in a National Cemetery in Los Angeles, CA for his service on the side of the North.James Nathaniel also served for a while in the war and his grave is marked as such in Brittin Cemetery, Cantrall, Illinois.
If my memory serves me correctly, I believe some Rockefellers and a future President paid someone to serve in their place during the Civil War.William Henry was well into his forties at the time of the Civil War and was under no obligation to serve as he was past the age of being drafted.
Respectfully, A Proud Descendent of William Henry Herndon
