Tom, THANK YOU for taking the time to look at the census records... The Texas State Archives has the Censusrecords but no Index. Great Grandpa W.D. (William Douglas?) Maxey was listed in the 1900 Texas Census as 41 years of age (b ca 1859) and born Mass.We have no other records on him before this census. He died when my grandpa, John Gilbert Maxey was 4 years old..We don't even know if he did come from Mass. One family story was that as a young man, he had gotten into some "trouble" in Louisiana and fled to Texas. The story does not relate what kind of trouble.. We can't even say for certain that he kept his original name. The census record was my only lead. John Gilbert Maxey was raised by Jesse Billingsley when grandma Maggie Furr Maxey remarried. We know that W.D. Maxey married Catherine Furr in Bastrop Co, Tx and then her cousin, Maggie Furr when Catherine died. I am the same James Robert New that posted the info on W.D. Maxey as possibly being William Douglas or William Andrew. The enquiry on the W.D. Maxey/Tiner/Shebestock was by a cousin of mine (on my father's side) who's ancestor was a Tiner.Maxey is my mother's maiden name. One of W.D. Maxey's daughter's married a Tiner. Thank you again as I had been unable to locate any index for 1860 Mass to check for myself.
