Hi Tina -
It's been a long time since we've seen each other (since your dad's funeral) - I'm Larry's daughter, Rose Mazzola's granddaughter, and Joseph/Elsa Mazzola's great-granddaughter.I am so sorry about your Grandma, my Aunt Lou.My dad was so sad when he heard that she had passed away.He loved her very much, and still talks about her and Uncle Joe.
There are many Joseph Mazzolas...it was customary to name the first son in the family Joseph Mazzola. My father was the first son in the direct line not to be named Joe, and although his last name is not Mazzola, it caused anger against my paternal grandfather, Armand Scroby.
I remember Elsa Mazzola - "Mimi", my great-grandma.Mama Rosa was Grandpa Joe's mom, and Momma Vetche was Mimi's mom.Mimi (Elsa) had 3 children with Joseph Mazzola, Rose, my Granny (married Armand Scroby), then Uncle Joe - Joseph Mazzola (Married Aunt Lu), and Aunt Babe, whose first name was Elvira. My Granny died in October 1988, Uncle Joe died about 9 years ago, Aunt Lu died about year ago, and Aunt Babe has been gone about 6 years now.
These were fun, wonderful people when I knew them as a little kid. There is drama in every family story, but these were people who were kind to me.I have never met such good cooks in my life, and I hope that I learned well from them.
I still have my dolls that Mimi gave me, jewelry from Grandpa Joe (he continued to have stalls in the Flint Flea Market until he passed away), my dollhouse that Aunt Babe made me by hand, and I have eyeshadows that Uncle Joe and Aunt Lou sent me that I'll never throw out.Of course, Granny is always with me.
I hope this helps somewhat - there is a web site where many of the older Mazzolas are buried, at the Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit. The records are searchable, which is nice.It is www.woodmerecemeteryresearch.com.
Best Regards,
Wendy Scroby Mazoway
