Just kidding!I guess we are a global bunch, anyway I do know there is at least ONE McAloon in Spain as my daughter Alison teaches at the American School in Madrid.
Did any of you guys get a lot of jibes directed at our unique name during school years?eg'loony toons','macaroon' etc. you probably know them all too well! If nothing else it probably inured you against all the slings and arrows you would encounter in later life! It certainly toughened me up (thick-skinned anyway). I was brought up in a dank mill town on the northern edge of the city of Manchester, and considering the population of Greater Manchester is 2.5 million I think we must have been the only McAloon's there! My dad came from Durham county in England and my mum was from Scotland. The name is supposed to have originated in the western highlands of Scotland (Argyle). The migrations started during the so-called 'highland clearances' where they were dispersed to N.Ireland, N.America, Australia etc. Although its a rare name there does seem to be 'pockets' of them, mainly in the county of Fermanagh NI,Durham in England, Rhode Island in New England and the Atlantic Provinces of Canada.
The only comparitively well-known McAloons I've heard of are the musical ones, ie Paddy McAloon the founder/leader of 'Prefab Sprout' (English),The 'Patrick McAloon Band' (American), 'Big Terry McAloon'(Irish). That said, I found this site by punching in 'McAloon' on the google engine and there were 17,100 results so the law of averages would suggest there are plenty more 'famous' McAloons globally.
I don't know if there is any authenticity in this, but there is supposed to be a family crest or coat of arms which is described as: 'red and gold horizontal stripes' with 'a sheath of five arrows tied with a red band'.
If there are any ancient language scholars on this forum it would be nice to get a translation of our (alleged) motto, which I think is Celtic (Gaelic):"Aonaibh Ri Cheile"
Lets keep this great and unique name going.
Terence James McAloon, Burlington,ON
