I believe that the Fasti is correct in stating that the Rev. Hugh Macbean was born 23 June 1778. I believe that the Croy Church yard table stone #147 is incorrect. I believe that theHugh Macbean's buried here is actually the child of Alex McBean and Rose Grant born 22 Dec 1774.
Per FHL British Film 990664
Dec 25, 1774 Alex McBaine Miller in Holme, Rosy Grant his spouse had a child Hugh born 22 baptized in front of congregation.
In regards to the debate about the Rev. Hugh Macbean's wife, Ann Fraser, being the daughter of William or Alexander Fraser. I have gathered quite a bit of evidence to show that her father was Alexander Macbean and not William Macbean.
evidence 1. The christening records for the children of Alexander Fraser and Annabella Munro record that Alexander was school master and a merchant. (I can send them to you if you would like).
#2. I have this record that talks about Alexander Fraser term as headmaster of Raining School.
ALEXANDER FRASER Inverness Raining's School1756-1757 left; returned 1771-1792.1775 went to Aberdeen University in winter and had to provide an interim.1787 the magistrates of Inverness complained to the Society that he neglected the school to attend to his business interests.Fraser replied that was ill will against him because he supported his brother's grocery business and politically his brother opposed the magistrates. The Society referred the dispute to the Inverness Presb. who replied that Fraser's trade did not interfere with his teaching. He bought barleu during the vacation. The Society gave him a warning to be "more circumspect". Dec. 1792 told to choose between teaching and trading. Feb 1793 resigned.
#3. IGI M110982 Inverness O.P.R. Alex Fraser assistant teacher to Annabald Munro 19 July 1780 Inverness, Inverness, Scotland
#4. Probate 12 Feb. 1828 Mrs Annabella Munro or otherwise Fraser, lately residing Church St. Inverness & Relect of the deceased Alexander Fraser Esq. merchant in Inverness. Executor, her daughter Ann Fraser Macbean, wife of the Rev. Hugh Macbean of Ardclach. (note I have a copy)
In Rev. Sage's book "Memorabilia Domestica" the Rev. Sage refers to another sister of John Fraser who married Mr. Macbean, Merchant in Florence, Italy. This sister is Janet Fraser. Janet Fraser married the Rev. Hugh Macbean's brother William Macbean. Janet and William Mcbean's son, Alexander Macbean, served as H.B.M. Consul in Leghorn, Italy.
