. Re our McBirnie family from Ayrshire Scotland and formerly Ireland.
Spelling is predominantly McBirnie from late 1800s, but prior to that was guessed by the minister who recorded events, as many were illiterate. Varied from McBirnie; McBurnie and McBurney.
Going from most recent: Elizabeth McBirnie, CrossHill Ayr b.1876 married Thomas Davidson Lafferty in 1904 resident of New Cumnock. They were my great grand parents on my mothers side, and emigrated to Australia about 1906. I know that at about the same time her sister and a brother moved to Canada, and the rest remained around the Ayr area in Scotland.
Elizabeth (Bessie) siblings were: Jock (Canada), Robert (Policeman,Scotland) b 1880, Samuel a policeman in Kilmarnock, Mary (Canada, married Blackie), Ed a bachelor (Canada), and Agnes Jeanie (Canada).
Their parents were: Thomas McBirnie b 1849, labourer of CrossHill and Margaret Swan b 1853, married Kirkmichael 1874. Thomas' brother was John b 1845 , daughter Mary - he was blind & had been a cotton weaver. Here the spelling starts to change between McBurnie & McBirnie....
Their parents were: Samuel McBurnie b 1816 CrossHill, married Mary McGechie b 1826 Maybole. Samuel's siblings were: James b 1810, Thomas b 1813.
Their parents were James McBirnie a weaver of Girvan and Mary (Ann) Thomson-they emigrated from Ireland.
There are 3 McBirnie 'cousins' sharing reasearch results. Willing to check details and share info if anyone thinks there may be a connection.
