Jesse McCaleb was killed in part of the unrest at the time of the Bannock War, 1878, when Indians attacked the freighting outfit which was enroute to Salmon, Idaho. This was part of Geo Shoup's early business ventures before he was appointed I T governor before he was elected as Idaho's first state governor. Jesse was buried on the spot which is about five miles north of Mackay, Idaho.A small cemetery of pioneers is still there, plainly marked next to U S 93 and just above the waters of Mackay Reservoir. After things settled down, Geo Shoup had Jesse's body disinterred and removed to the Salmon City Cemetery. Mt McCaleb overlooks the town of Mackay and the Jesse McCaleb Cemetery which is the Mackay city cemetery. Any good Idaho history will contain the story.
