In the files of the British Consul-General in Rio de Janeiro is a letter of April 1878 from J W McCammon [actually I wrote "MacCummon", perhaps my transcription error] on the notepaper of the Wabash Railway Co, Hannibal, Marion County, Missouri. He is asking for news of the whereabouts of Charles H CHAPMAN, about whom he says:
- came to USA in 1865 with son and daughter - son was murdered in Chicago in 1871 - daughter married 12/1871 - Charles H Chapman had returned to Brazil - They had received a letter from him from Rio de Janeiro but he was "believed living in Seabara where he had gold mines" and "worked for mine superintendant MORGAN"**
** Sabará is a gold mining town in Minas Gerais and not far from the famous Morro Velho gold mine at Nova Lima, where George/Jorge Morgan was former slavemaster and local bigwig.
There is no reply on file [ref TNA FO 1128/116].This looks like the right family except that Karen has Frances's marriage on 23 Mar 1876 (or was she married twice?).
