Regarding your conversation, Alexander is a fairly common McCaskill name (as is John). However, most SC McCaskills have their roots in Kershaw County, SC--the county seat is Camden. If you go up US Hwy 1 North from Camden you will come to the zip code of Bethune--this is where the families settled in the early 1800s (1805-1815 haven't found anyone with an exact date). Most of them were buried in the Old Scotch Cemetary off US 1 in Bethune; the cemetary dates from 1799.I know of Alexanders that date back as brothers of my great grandfathers.Perhaps this will help.
The other primary group of McCaskills settled up from Wilmington, NC from about 1790 forward. The SC group came in from Wilmington from what I have been told and settled down into Kershaw County.
