In an effort to find my McCleary (McClary) ancestors I found it necessary to log every McCleary, McClearey, McClary, McCleery, McCleerey, McClerie, McClery, McClarey and McClerey I could find in the Colony of Virginia between the years 1700 and 1800. The biggest surprise was the John McCleary family of Augusta County, VA. I found a lost generation. At least it was lost to me.
John McCleary "Land Grant John" received a 420 acre land grant in Augusta County, VA on 04 Apr 1748. A map of The Beverley Patent shows John's grant to be on the western boundary of Beverley Manor and identified all of his neighbors. This proved invaluable in determining that John's three sons also lived on the 420 acre grant.
