Our DNA testing is off to a good start. We have two McCloughan samples with results and two with testing in progress. The first thing that we discovered is that we are definitely not in the same gene pool as the majority of the McLaughlins, but we are interesting. If you go to the following website, you will find a discussion by John McLaughlin (co-coordinator of the McLaughlin/Maclachlan project). We fall into what McLaughlin calls group 4. McLaughlin even calls it eye-popping
McCloughan, along with McClughan and McCluhan may be Irish variants of MacLaggan (a Scottish surname). This is strictly conjecture at this point but needs to be verified by getting DNA samples from this group of surnames.
If you are a male with one of these surnames, please join our project. We need to expand the geography of our sample base to the UK and Australia as well as other parts of the US.
You can obtain a sample kit by going to the recruitment tab on the website. I strongly recommend a minimum of 37 markers.
