The first Houston to go to Rockbridge (Old Augusta County) VA was "Immigrant John" Houston born 1690 in Ulster, Northern Ireland. Even though this family considered themselves "Irish"because they came from Ireland, their background was really Scottish from Renfrewshire (Ancient Lanarkshire). "Immigrant John's" father was Samuel Houston of Londonderry. He died in Northern Ireland, but his wife, Margaret McClung Houston lived after him for twenty years, surviving the Siege of Londonderry, the arduous trip to America by sailboat, then the move to Lancaster, PA and subsequent moves until they got to the Borden Tract and bought the property they named Timber Ridge. This wonderful McClung lady lived to be 98 years old. I also believe she may be buried in the Brownsville Providence Church cemetery a few miles north of Lexington, VA. Are there any Mcclungs out there who might know something of this wonderful pioneer lady??
